The New Hanover County Public Library Story Park consisted of the demolition of the existing park, approximately 0.4 acres, located adjacent to the New Hanover County Library and New Hanover County Parking Deck. Originally the park was enclosed with a masonry wall, obstructing the view of the park from the main road. There was a fountain that was not functioning at the entrance of the Library, surrounded by an unkempt landscape.
The site improvements included new landscaping, concrete walks, paving, storm drainage, and an addition of a sunshade canopy. By re-grading the site, and removing the masonry wall, the park became visible from the street and instantly became more welcoming to families visiting the library. The park was designed to bring the library experience outdoors and invite new outdoor activities for the children’s programs including large wooden instruments and a giant chess board. The center lawn was designed as a mini amphitheater stage, to be used for story time or performances and the garden was designed to educate the community of native and edible plants.
